“During my tenure as a Member of Congress, I have had the honor and the privilege of serving with seven Speakers and nine Presidents. Thomas P. ``Tip'' O'Neill was always my friend, and he not only established the all-time record by serving 10 consecutive years as Speaker of the House, but he loved and respected the most powerful legislative body in the world. During his tenure, he established a record that his people can be proud of and one that will always be remembered by those who served with him. Words are inadequate to fully appraise Tip O'Neill's tremendous capacity for loyalty and love of his country. In every position he held, either private or public, he achieved distinction. His service in all of his assignments was marked by a high sense of conscience and duty. His character, his achievements, and his faithful service will be an inspiration to generations yet to come. It was a distinct honor and privilege to serve with my friend, Thomas P. ``Tip'' O'Neill, Jr. in the Congress of the United States and to his lovely wife and family, I extend my deepest sympathy in their bereavement.”
