The day you defeated Saddam Hussein was like a dark curtain being lifted off of the Iraqi people and the daylight shone in. The sense of gratitude among the Iraqis, not only leaders, but rank and file folks that we met, was deeply moving to me as an American, and it was real and it was genuine. And I believe that from what they said, that among the 10 million souls who call themselves Iraqis, it is the dominant, overwhelming opinion of the people, one of gratitude to the people of the United States of America for ending a nightmare in their Nation.
