When our Government is spoken of as some menacing, threatening foreign entity, it ignores the fact that in our democracy, Government is us.

It coarsens our culture, and at its worst, it can send signals to the most extreme elements of our society that perhaps violence is a justifiable response.

Tonight's technology has made it possible for us to get our news and information from a growing range of sources.

That is what makes us different. That is what sets us apart.

This democracy we have is a precious thing.

Let us remember in our thoughts and prayers those suffering from natural disasters in Haiti, Chile, and elsewhere.
