The Recovery Act will create new jobs making our homes and offices more energy efficient.

If we, our children, and our grandchildren are to prosper in the 21st century, we must decrease our dependence on oil.

What we need to do is raise the cap on the payroll tax so that wealthy individuals are paying a little bit more into the system.

We talk about balancing the budget. We talk about sound dollars. But the policy we have got in place here to fix it is not consistent with the ideal policies we want to have.

Short term, we have got to focus on boosting the economy and creating jobs. Part and parcel of that is a plan for a sustainable fiscal situation long term.

This plan must begin today, a plan I'm confident will save or create at least three million jobs over the next few years.

For every day we wait or point fingers or drag our feet, more Americans will lose their jobs, and our nation will sink deeper into a crisis that at some point we may not be able to reverse.

It is true that we cannot depend on government alone to create jobs or long-term growth. But at this particular moment, only government can provide the short-term boost necessary to lift us from a recession this deep and severe.

This plan must begin today. A plan I'm confident will save or create at least 3 million jobs over the next few years.

If nothing is done, this recession could linger for years. The unemployment rate could reach double digits.

It would be a mistake to take our success in the campaign as a sign that our work is somehow complete.

It is time to set a new course for this economy, and that change must begin now.

The true test of the policies we'll pursue won't be whether they're Democratic or Republican ideas, but whether they create jobs, grow our economy, and put the American Dream within reach of the American people.
