I share fully the concerns expressed by the Senator from Ohio about the need to ensure worker safety and health programs are pursued vigorously at the Mound facility. When we ask workers to undertake potentially dangerous decontamination and decommissioning work, we need to assure them that all reasonable precautions have been taken to protect their safety and health. However, the committee has been informed that the Department has statutory authority to pursue appropriate worker protection programs at the Mound facility. I believe the Senator from Ohio has received assurances from the Department of Energy that important upgrades at the Mound facility will be pursued, and I commend him for his leadership in obtaining those assurances.
