“I will support the tax cutting bill and the balanced budget bill. As a member of the Committee on Commerce, I have been heavily involved in the Medicare portions; and, so, I feel like I have a pretty firm grasp of what is in that bill. I also have made an extra effort to figure out what is in the tax cutting bill; and on the basis of that knowledge, I feel that I am well-informed and can make a good decision on whether to support these bills. Let me explain to my colleagues why I am supporting these bills, because I am one of the Republicans who voted against the balanced budget bill earlier this month. The reason that I did that was because I am concerned about how well the economy is going to do. Just like everyone else in this body, I am praying that the economy continues to do well. I was also concerned that we should do a little bit more with reducing spending rather than having more spending in the bill. However, these two bills that we are talking about have to do with keeping promises. On the tax cutting side of the bill, I made promises before I went to Congress to fulfill a $500 per child tax credit. And we are doing that. On the Medicare side, we are making some significant improvements in Medicare.”
