We certainly did learn a great deal, and it was disturbing to hear how, you know, sequestration is going to affect our operations, not only there, but everywhere we are represented.

Well, these reports are disturbing, certainly.

My first question is in three parts, and I would like to ask each of you the question...

I do not agree with the deep cuts to our Armed Services.

The Army has planned on reducing its end strength to 490,000 soldiers over the next several years.

The 2011 strategic guidance, the effects of sequestration and the planned withdrawal of the U.S. forces from Afghanistan place a significant pressure on all our military components, but particularly the Army.

This is the first in the series of hearings that will dive into some level of detail about the readiness issues for each of the Services.

I thank you all for your testimony and your service to our Nation, and I look forward to our dialogue this afternoon.

Instability in this region will have a direct and immediate effect for our entire Nation.

The island of Guam is very proud of the close relationship that we share between Anderson Air Force Base and our local community.

The FY 13 NDAA under section 2832 requires the Department of Defense to meet 4 requirements in order to fully spend Government of Japan funds.

The reductions already made to military forces and those requested of DOD in the coming years simply do not draw a parallel to the current threats facing our Nation.

Well, General and Secretary, I would respectfully request that we have something there permanently.

I appreciate the Department's continued commitment of significant funding for the realignment of Marines from Okinawa to Guam.

I certainly didn't think it would be under these circumstances.

I want to thank you for your leadership and proactive approach with respect to the current North Korean threats.

I am a very strong proponent of the program and I value strong state relationships such as the one between Guam and the Philippines.

The U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands have become increasingly affected by the drug trade.

Donors normally like to be recognized. Sometimes there are cases where they do not want to be recognized.

The education center under the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall would be a fitting testament to the soldiers who have given their lives to protect our country.

I stand firm in recognizing the commitments and the sacrifices made by our soldiers.

I found it very ironic that despite BRAC rounds on Guam, the Department of Navy continues to seek private or Government of Guam land to meet training requirements on the island.

Given that BRAC 2005 ended up costing more and saving less than expected, I remain skeptical about the value of a new BRAC round at this juncture.

These bad actors unnecessarily compete with legally captured seafood from American fishermen.
