On the recordMarch 15, 1995
I would just like to say in my hometown, Colquitt County, GA, the DARE Program has been extremely important in our educational system. The program has been in effect for the last 4 or 5 years, during which period of time we have had numerous incidents of the police officers who come into the school being looked upon as role models by the other students. This had led not only to an increase in awareness of the drug situation and alcoholism in our homes, but it also provided many other benefits in the area of child abuse. It is a program that I am very familiar with, my wife having been a teacher for 25 years in our public school system. It is something that has worked very well; it is something that is needed and I support the gentleman's amendment.
