On the recordJuly 17, 2000
I was reminded how proud I am of my home State of Maine, which has taken a different tact. Basically what the State of Maine did in the last legislative session through the leadership of Chellie Pingree, a State Senator, Mark Lawrence who is running for the U.S. Senate, and some others, was to adopt a law which provides that the State of Maine will negotiate lower prices for all of those people, seniors and others, who are not now covered with prescription drug insurance of one kind or another. So about 300,000 people in Maine would be covered under this plan. The way the law is written, the State would essentially act as what is calmed as a pharmacy benefit manager.
