On the recordApril 29, 2004
On behalf of Senator McCain, Senator Wyden, myself, and others who are in favor of Internet tax freedom, I respectfully urge my colleagues to vote for cloture on this amendment. What is at stake is whether 15- to 18-percent taxes will be imposed upon Internet access. The Internet is a great invention for the advancement of ideas, of information, for commerce, for telemedicine, and for education. This country has been a leader in technology, although we are falling behind, particularly in broadband. I ask my colleagues to vote for cloture. There can be germane amendments but allow us to go forward. A vote for cloture is a vote for freedom and opportunity for the American people. Stand on the side of that principle.
