I also understand that one very promising approach would be to use laser radar to acquire such a three-dimensional image. This technology is highly accurate, and is already used in industrial applications to measure such things as minute imperfections in airplane wings. Unlike more traditional photography, it also would work in a greater variety of lighting conditions and at a much greater distance. It also has the advantage of avoiding allegations of racial profiling because it makes no use of skin color, instead measuring facial features.
