I noted in my Message that lands administered by BLM contain areas of great cultural and ecological value.

We must see America provide basic energy from America.

I have pledged to you that our Nation will never import one drop more foreign oil than we did in 1977.

I would rather burn a ton of Kentucky coal than to see our Nation become dependent by buying another barrel of OPEC oil.

I think it's better for us as Americans to face the facts, and as long as I'm President, I intend to tell you the facts, to tell you the truth, and to ask for your help.

I want Congress to give me the authority to require utility companies to cut in half their use of oil and to switch to other fuels, especially coal.

The proposed agreement with Australia is the first such agreement submitted to the Congress since enactment of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Act of 1978.

I am particularly pleased that this first agreement is with Australia, a strong supporter of the Non-Proliferation Treaty and of international non-proliferation efforts generally.
