Shaw Vaughan was a loving and supportive son and older brother, an avid hunter and fly fisherman. One of his most prized possessions was his 1969 Jeepster Commando, an off-roading vehicle he had personally rebuilt, affectionately named Hercules. Hercules sits quiet today, its red finish gleaming undimmed in the mountain sun. U.S. Army LT John Shaw Vaughan, of Edwards, in Eagle County in my State of Colorado, was killed on June 7 in Mosul, Iraq. Lieutenant Vaughan was a young man with his entire life before him: He was a mere 23 years old, and had been in Iraq only a month. As a middle school student, Shaw Vaughan caught the eye of our military leaders for his regional science fair project: comparing the accuracy of store-bought ammunition with that assembled by him. He graduated Battle Mountain High School in 2001 and attended the prestigious Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL. Upon graduation, Lieutenant Vaughan was 1 of only 70 cadets, out of 5,000, to receive a much-sought-after assignment in military intelligence in the infantry. It was a high honor, reflecting his intellect, work ethic, and commitment to our Nation. - today Senator Allard and I introduced the ``Rocky Mountain Science Collections Center Act of 2007,'' a bill to establish a secure collections facility and education center for archeological, anthropological, paleontological, zoological, and geological artifacts and archival documentation from throughout the Rocky Mountain region at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Denver, Colorado. Our bill would authorize $15 million, subject to appropriations, for the Secretary of Interior to provide grants to pay the Federal share, 50 percent of the cost of constructing appropriate, museum-standard facilities to house the collections of the Museum. Since its founding in 1900, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science has been the principal natural history museum between Chicago and Los Angeles and has educated more than 70 million visitors. The Museum holds more than a million objects in public trust. Together, the Museum's collections, library, and archives provide the foundation for understanding science and the natural and cultural history of the region and serve as the primary resource for informal science education to Colorado school and general audiences. - let me at the outset say that I am proud that I was 1 of the 14 Members who signed the agreement just referred to by my good friend from Ohio. In the signing of that agreement, one of the things that brought people together was the concept of respect for each other, mutual respect for our colleagues in this Chamber, mutual respect for the people of America. In fact, when those kinds of statements emanate from Members of this Chamber or when they emanate from some of the constituent groups that follow us, it is a violation of the respect we should afford each other. - I rise to reflect for a moment on the service and life of SFC Michael Parrott of Tinmath, CO. Sergeant First Class Parrott was tragically killed last month while serving this Nation in Balad, Iraq. Today would have been Sergeant First Class Parrott's 50th birthday. Mike Parrott was a native of Canton, NC, where he graduated from Pisgah High School in 1974 and went on to earn a degree from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. His 6-foot-tall frame made him hard to miss in a crowd, but it was his easy smile and brown eyes that first drew the attention of his wife, Meg, when she was a student at UNC-Asheville almost two decades ago. Mike Parrott was honest, opinionated, and unafraid to speak his mind. His wife, Meg, knew how unique Mike was when she discovered that he kept Voltaire in his bathroom. They celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary last month. Mike Parrott was an avid fan of the outdoors and could often be found biking, camping and hiking, activities he and Meg often enjoyed together. Mike rode his bike to and from work, and made it a point to run every day. In fact, this past year, on the day of the Leadville Marathon, Sergeant First Class Parrott laced up his running shoes and ran 26.2 miles in the blazing Iraqi heat. Sergeant First Class Parrott was a true American patriot. - I rise today to discuss the question currently before the Senate regarding whether to allow Federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. It is clear from the last 2 days of debate in the Senate that people on both sides of this issue have very strong feelings about their positions, and rightly so. This is an extremely important issue that raises a whole host of questions to which there are no easy answers. On one hand, we must consider the fundamental question of how to treat potential human life. On the other, we must consider the vast potential of a scientific field that could greatly improve millions of actual human lives and save millions more. When the stakes are this high, we are obligated to have an honest, open, and thorough debate. In keeping with the gravity of these questions and the potential ramifications of how we answer them, I believe that both the Government and the scientific community should address them responsibly. Like millions of other American families, my family has been touched by the ache of loss brought about by Alzheimer's disease. My father died of complications only a few years ago. At the end of his life, I wanted nothing more than to be able to help ease his suffering.
