Now, the President wants to open the shores of Florida to Haiti's economic refugees. By expanding a failed policy of economic sanctions, we only increase misery and starvation among the Haitian people--and strengthen the hands of the military leaders. Now President Clinton has issued an open invitation of asylum to the Haitian people. The United States is not only encouraging a flotilla of Haitian refugees--we are forcing the Haitian people to come through an irrational and inhumane policy of economic sanctions. Florida is a State already suffering from the failed immigration policies of the Federal Government. Our hospitals, our schools, our prisons and our taxpayers are already overburdened by the flood of illegal immigrants. Florida, like the rest of the Nation, simply cannot afford another Clinton disaster. Hunger strikes and liberal pickets are no substitute for a consistent, well-reasoned foreign policy.”
