I rise today to honor a true legend, somebody that I am proud to call a friend, as we recognize the 40th anniversary of one of the greatest performances in all of sports, the 1986 Masters. Jack Nicklaus had been dismissed as past his prime, but he shocked the world when he mounted the greatest charge that Augusta has ever witnessed. The Golden Bear birdied 9, birdied 10, birdied 11, birdied 13. He eagled 15 with a 4-iron that landed 12 feet from the pin, nearly made a hole-in-one on 16, and birdied 17 to take the lead for the first time of the week. When it was all over, he shot a final round of 65 and won his sixth Masters' title, a record that still stands today. His 18 major championship wins continue to inspire every amateur golfer, every athlete. Anybody who aspires for greatness, he inspires them. Now, 40 years later, what happened in Augusta, Georgia, on April 14, 1986, it is a testament to what is possible when talent, perseverance, and hard work all converge at the right moment. I ask everyone to join me in recognizing Jack Nicklaus on that anniversary of his incredible win.
