Bill Nelson is an American politician and attorney who served as a United States Senator from Florida from 2001 to 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously represented Florida's 9th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 2001. Nelson also held the position of Florida's Insurance Commissioner from 1995 to 1999, where he focused on consumer protection and insurance reform.

Public health emergencies are going to continue. And that exemption does not do anything for the greater Medicaid needs after a natural disaster like these hurricanes.
Relaxing the per-capita cap by $5 billion in total for 50 States over a 5-year period just simply is not adequate.
The bill guts the Medicaid program and, therefore, cuts hundreds of billions of dollars of support to pregnant women, low-income adults, and children over time.
The Graham-Cassidy bill caps Medicaid, effectively cutting billions from the program.
I think a national advisory commission on seniors and disasters is important and would identify 'best practices' across the country.
I introduced a bill with Senators Rubio, Casey, and Collins to create a national advisory commission to advise the Department of Health and Human Services on disaster preparedness for seniors.
As it is currently structured, Medicaid can respond to public health emergencies and natural disasters.
