On the recordJanuary 27, 2004
I would like to offer a comment or two about the legislation before us and express my thanks to two Members of the Senate who have been very involved in shaping this legislation, Senator Grassley and Senator Kennedy. I thank them for the work they have done. There is a lot of concern in this country about the exodus of manufacturing jobs and technology jobs. The legislation before us is a thoughtful, timely response to a number of employers, large and small, who are concerned that unless we address this problem with respect to selecting an appropriate successor to the 30-year Treasury bond, an appropriate measure to determine what magnitude of money should be contributed to pension funds, we are going to otherwise increase the exodus of jobs, manufacturing and otherwise. We are doing good work. My hope is we will be able to finish this legislation this week and get on with our business and allow employers to get on with theirs.
