“considering that our country was founded on certain principles, among them the freedom of religious expression, it is utterly appalling that places of worship--homes to hundreds and hundreds of congregations--have apparently been targeted to bear the brunt of racial hatred and religious bigotry in this country. While I am absolutely outraged at the series of church fires that have brought us to this point, I am pleased that the Congress has worked swiftly and in a bipartisan manner to ensure that the church arson law is improved and strengthen. This is an issue that knows no color, race, or religion. It affects each and every one of us Americans; as a country. The passage of this bill will not heal the wounds created by the tragic burning of churches, nor help ease the pain felt by those who have seen their place of worship destroyed by the senseless and bigoted act of another. But this measure will help punish the instigators of these fires by making it easier to prosecute those responsible for these egregious acts. And in light of recent events, this could not be more timely nor more crucial.”
