A member of the Democratic Party, Blinken has played a significant role in shaping U.S. foreign policy, focusing on issues such as international alliances, climate change, and global security. He previously served as Deputy National Security Advisor and Deputy National Security Advisor during the Obama administration, where he was involved in key diplomatic initiatives, including the Iran nuclear deal.
The actions of the Assad regime and Russia... risk fundamentally undermining this initiative.
Senator Cardin, I think you are exactly right that in a sense the harder questions are almost what follows the military defeat of Daesh in Iraq and certainly in Syria.
It will be this effort that ensures that Daesh, once defeated, stays defeated.
We strongly support Prime Minister Abadi's leadership on reform and reconciliation.
Our primary task is to defeat Daesh, which poses the most immediate threat to our citizens, to our country, to our allies and partners.
The conflict continues to be fueled by patrons and proxies with very divergent interests.
We have deprived Daesh of about 25 percent of the territory it once controlled in Syria and more than 50 percent of the territory it once controlled in Iraq.
We believe that the effort that we have made to reach this agreement with Russia was the best way to effectively move toward ending the civil war.
