“I will not vote for this budget resolution. First, I do not approve of how the House Democratic leadership decided to have the House vote on this budget before the minority party had a chance to examine it. Few members have been able to read this budget. On a measure that approves the spending of $1.5 trillion in taxpayer money, Congress should have at least 3 days to look at it. We need to see what spending programs are being expanded and what defense projects are being cut. For while I may not be familiar with every aspect of this budget, we in Congress know in general what it contains. We know that this budget will allow the Federal deficit to grow by almost $900 billion in the next 5 years. We know that the $26 billion spending cut included in this budget by the Senate was decimated by the President and Democratic leadership. We know that this budget leans on ill-advised defense reductions. I regret that the Republican 'Putting Families First' budget considered in March did not pass. That budget contained tax credits for families with children, genuine spending cuts, a crime bill that focused on discouraging criminal behavior, a responsible health care bill, and a defense budget that reflects the need for a strong military. I hope that my colleagues across the aisle will have the courage to consider the ideas in this alternative budget in the future.”
