“I rise today to acknowledge Chairman Walsh and the members of the Military Quality of Life--VA Appropriations Subcommittee for their willingness to work with the VA to meet the needs of Colorado's veteran population. The VA's effort to coordinate and reassess the current and future health care needs of our Nation's veterans has been a monumental undertaking. The CARES report cited numerous locations throughout the VA's nationwide network of medical facilities that are in need of improvement. A replacement facility for the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System in Denver was one of the top priorities listed in the CARES report. Unfortunately, the original plan to share facilities with the University of Colorado was deemed infeasible. After years of hard work and negotiations, the VA has finally found a workable solution that meets their needs, and will allow them to continue their 50-year working relationship with the University of Colorado. I commend Chairman Walsh for his commitment to this project, and for helping the VA reprogram existing funds for the purchase of the land. This is a critical first step in accomplishing the mission at hand. While there is still much to be done in order for this project to be a success, I am optimistic that we will be able to overcome the obstacles and provide the veterans of the Rocky Mountain region with the hospital they deserve.
