“I am here today because I am deeply concerned about the devastating impact the President's budget could have on working families across this country, particularly at a time when our Nation stands at the very brink of war. The cuts that are proposed in this budget stand to hurt the very families whose loved ones are overseas preparing to fight this war. Last weekend I had an opportunity to meet with a number of military families whose husbands, whose brothers, sisters and wives are courageously serving our Nation in Afghanistan and the Middle East. They shared with me their thoughts and fears while their loved ones were deployed so many miles away from home. In addition to expressing the uncertainties that they face, they are also concerned about their children's future. That is why education is a major concern to them. They know that the quality of their children's education is dependent upon some significant Federal support. Mr. Speaker, the President's budget proposal seeks to cut education funding by more than $10 billion in the next year alone.”
