“Here we are debating for the 31st time to repeal health care reform. But again, repeal would be a tragedy for America. Repeal would mean that children with preexisting conditions would lose their health care coverage. Repeal would mean that 86 million Americans will no longer have access to free preventative care services. Repeal would mean seniors would no longer save money on their prescription drugs. Repeal would mean that 16 million middle class Americans would not get tax credits to pay for their health care. Repeal would mean that my constituent's sister who had breast cancer would still lose her house due to excessive medical bills because she could not afford health insurance. Repeal would mean that my constituent who had successful ovarian cancer treatment years ago would still not be able to purchase health insurance because of her preexisting condition. There are millions of Americans who are fortunate enough to have health insurance they actually like, and they ask me why they should support reform. Well, first, this economic downturn should have taught us all that we are just one pink slip away from losing our health insurance. By allowing the unemployed to purchase affordable insurance, health care reform changes that. Second, the uninsured, who have no other choice but to use the emergency room as a primary care office, drastically raise hospital rates for the rest of Americans who do have insurance.…”
