On the recordJuly 19, 2001
I do have some areas of disagreement with the general bill, not with the gentlewoman from New York but with the general bill, so I wanted to take a few moments to express those. I do not think that the bill gives sufficient resources, sufficient to match the compassion of the American people or the needs of the people of El Salvador in response to the earthquakes in El Salvador. It is hard to imagine, Mr. Chairman, that the earthquakes in El Salvador caused more damage in El Salvador than all of Hurricane Mitch did, combined, in Central America.
