I rise to support the Mollohan amendment to restore funding to the Legal Services Corporation. Among its services, the LSC provides crucial legal assistance for victims of domestic violence. Over 1 million women a year are victims of violence by husbands or boyfriends. Domestic violence is a problem at all income levels, and legal services clinics are often the only means by which low-income women can legally protect themselves from their batteries. Legal Services assist victims of domestic violence in a variety of ways, including obtaining protection orders, child support, child custody, divorces from abusive spouses, and emergency housing. San Fernando Valley Legal Services estimates that, as a result of reduction in staff because of these cuts, at least 1,000 victims of domestic violence in that area alone will be denied assistance in obtaining emergency temporary restraining orders. This Congress has shown a strong bipartisan commitment to important implications for the future. I urge you to support the Mollohan-Fox amendment to restore funding to the Legal Services Corporation.
