SEC. . SENSE OF THE SENATE REGARDING A FOLLOW-ON FORCE FOR BOSNIA The Senate finds the following: (1) U.S. military forces were deployed to Bosnia as members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Implementation Forces (IFOR) to implement the military aspects of the Dayton Agreement. (2) The military aspects of the Dayton Agreement were being successfully implemented. (3) Following the recommendation of the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on December 11, 1996, to extend the presence of NATO forces in Bosnia until June 1998 so that progress could be achieved in implementing the civil aspects of the Dayton Agreement, the President announced his decision to extend the presence of United Stats forces in Bosnia to participate in the NATO Stabilization Force (SFOR) until June 1998. (4) The cost of U.S. participation in operations in Bosnia from 1992 through June 1998 is estimated to exceed $7 billion. (5) The President and the Secretary of Defense have stated that United States forces are to be withdrawn from Bosnia by June 1998.
