as the Senate considers this nation's future energy policy, we would like to discuss the intent of the amendment that the Senate will adopt regarding the planning and coordination of energy transmission lines in the Great Lakes. I would like to thank my colleagues, Mr. Bingaman and Mr. Murkowski, for working with us to authorize the Department of Energy, in consultation with Federal and State agencies, to study the anticipated growth of energy transmission infrastructure in the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes ecosystem is complex, so it's important to understand how to minimize the possible impacts that the various energy transmission infrastructure proposals may have on the Great Lakes ecosystem.
