Someday more politicians will approach tough decisions such as welfare reform with more care and integrity. This is not that day. Someday politicians will place children above politics. This is not that day. Someday politicians will place truth above personal gain. This is not that day. Too many Democrats and Republicans will run for reelection on this so-called welfare reform legislation. The truth is this bill does nothing to train mothers for work, to develop jobs, to help recipients become independent. This bill is welfare fraud, not welfare reform. This bill penalizes poor working families and will drive more children into poverty. Only time will reveal the shame of what happened this day, and only history will record the blatant lack of courage to simply do the right thing.
