On the recordJune 26, 1997
The fact is many young families starting out with young children pay more in payroll taxes, Social Security than they pay in income taxes. But the Republican plan will not give them the benefit of the $500 child credit. What does that mean? That means that these working families making 20, $25,000 a year are going to find themselves without the benefit of this. They still have two young children. They are still struggling hard. But the Republicans do not understand that because one does not make a lot of money does not mean they do not work hard. They work very hard and they pay the most regressive taxes, and they refuse to give the child credit to those families.
