“The point is that what we are talking about is taking people who have continued to lose purchasing power, who have continued to lose their ability to support their families, to purchase the very basics, the very basics of the American economy, health care, put away money for a pension, put away money in savings, to be able to have decent housing for themselves and their children. Those basics are now not afforded to people who go to work and work 8 hours a day, work 52 weeks a year, in many instances find that they have to try to work overtime, all of those things simply to try to reach the poverty line. That is what we are here for and that is what the gentlewoman has talked about restoring. That is what the President of the United States has talked about restoring, and it is absolutely fundamental and important that it be done.”
