On the recordJune 10, 1999
I think the amendment pending--which, unfortunately, the other side is going to move to table--is a proconsumer, probusiness, pro-ordinary person amendment. It is a commonsense amendment. It simply says to the manufacturer, if you have a fix available and you determine you do, then fix the problem. We are only talking about computers that were made in the last 10 years. We are exempting all the rest. We are not adding an undue burden. There are a lot of good people out there who are making the fixes. We are saying to the rest of business, emulate that, fix the problem, and there will be no lawsuits, no waiting at the courthouse door; you will be able to get your computer back in operation, you will be able to keep your business going and growing. For some reason, the other side cannot see their way clear to accepting this.
