On the recordMarch 23, 1994
It is an honor for me to serve on the Budget Committee. In the House of Representatives I served on the Budget Committee for 6 years. I like the assignment because on the Budget Committee, you have a chance to step back and really look at the spending priorities for our country. It is the larger picture, and it is a time when we can decide what our priorities should be in the long run. In other words, it is not the line items we consider, but who we are as a Nation, and where we are making our investments, and what is important to us. People often ask me when I am home in California, and I am sure they ask you, Madam President: 'Senator, what is your long-range plan to get this country on the right track?'... we need to honor our children. We need to invest in our children.
