I want to thank the Senator from Virginia for his comments, because I could not agree with him more. When I was in local government many years ago, developers would come before us and they would ask to build on a flood plain or on a marsh land. They would ask to build on areas where it was clear there was a danger, and the local zoning ordinance, many times, told them no, and there was litigation that sometimes ensued. I have to say this to the Senator, and I want to give him a little good news: Since the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, when I was a Congresswoman and represented that area, all of the seismic upgrades that took place in the State of California since that time--all of those held through this earthquake. I say to the Senator that even on the same freeway where they had retrofitted one side, it held, and the other side did not. But I think the Senator is right. I am happy to see that in this bill the Senator from West Virginia brings us, there is $15 million in there which is put in there to gather scientific evidence so that we will have some recommendations for seismic safety and ways that we can learn from this disaster. But I agree with the Senator wholeheartedly.

It's up to his colleagues to determine if they want such a coward, such a liar, to be their leader, and or maybe even speaker.

There was a violent attack on our Capitol on January 6. We know what we saw. We knew it then. All these Republicans and right-wing commentators knew it then. And they decided to step back and not tell the truth. And the truth is coming out.

The way the Senate works, as you know, it’s a supermajority to get anything done. It has nothing to do with age.
