Pedro Ramirez is the student body president of Fresno State University. He is studying political science and agricultural economics. He is another face of the DREAM Act. His parents brought him to the United States When he was 3 years old. Did Pedro know he was doing anything wrong at 3? Nor did David know he was doing anything wrong at 9. Pedro discovered he was in this country illegally, again, when he began applying to college when he was 18. His immigration status became public knowledge when an anonymous e-mail to the Fresno Bee detailed how he was forced to waive a small stipend the university provides to its student president. He had to waive that. Pedro is paying his tuition with private scholarships and by mowing lawns. This is what he writes: The DREAM Act itself symbolizes what it is to be an American, which is our goal. We want to contribute to the United States, and utilize the degrees and skills we gained, to make it a better place. Now let's look at Maria Duque, 19 years old. She is the vice president of student government at Fullerton College. When she was 5 years old, she moved to Los Angeles from Ecuador with her parents who were seeking a better life for their children. As a high school student, she finished sixth in her class with a 4.4 grade point average. I don't know how one gets over 4; I guess by doing bonus work and getting an A-plus-plus.
