Should women Federal employees or their dependents be treated the same as other women in the work force or should they be singled out, punished, have their rights taken away from them and be treated differently? None could be more important than this, regardless of the way you view the issue on abortion. And we know in the Republican platform, the platform committee adopted a platform which would criminalize abortion, urging adoption of a constitutional amendment which would deny women the right to choose even in matters of rape or incest, and we know that many here who speak out on this issue and that is really their whole desire. The fact is, abortion is legal in this great land. My friend and colleague says we are trying to stop abortion on demand. There is no such thing as abortion on demand in this country. There is a Supreme Court case called Roe versus Wade. Yes, a woman has the right to make this personal, private decision without a U.S. Senator telling her what to do in the first 3 months of her pregnancy.
