One idea that has come up time and again in conversation with my constituents and various organizations in my State of California, is the possibility of creating a Federal holiday on election day. I think that this would be one of the most effective ways to ensure that as many people as possible have an opportunity to cast their vote and exercise that most fundamental democratic right. Many of the hard-working people in this country--people for whom election day represents a unique opportunity to make their voices heard--find it difficult to get to the polls. Many work long hours, or have children that they have to get to school. Would the Senator from Connecticut agree that we should make it easier for these people to cast their vote as well?
