“I think this is wrong. Number two: do the American people deserve a tax cut? Sure they do. But we have some old bills to pay and interest on those bills. If all of the tax revenue belongs to all of the American people, so does our national debt, and that should be paid off. And we have family obligations, too: A solvent Social Security System, a prescription drug benefit in Medicare, a superb education system for our children. That is why we should budget before we spend. Number three: Let me warn Californians and New Yorkers to fasten their seatbelts, because under the Bush tax plan they will not be able to deduct their State income taxes or their property taxes anymore. I think there is a better way. We should be fiscally responsible. We should budget first, pay off our debt, and save and invest prudently. Vote against the plan.”
