“I would just like to summarize by saying this is not an issue that should be fought on the backs of those that are elected to serve in local government. But there have been sins of the past, the LEAA program. I think it is important to point out how those dollars were misused. I would like to show this. I would rather have community police than this. This is what Federal dollars were spent for in the past. I would like to show this. I think the people in my community would rather have police in their automobiles, community policing and working with the community. This did not work. This was pork. We have a decision to make today by supporting the Schumer-Conyers- Chapman amendment and saying that we want police and not pork, we want to retain what works, and we want to listen to law enforcement, schoolboard members, those that serve in local government to make optimum use of our Federal dollars for community policing.”
