I share that view, and the thing that is frustrating to me sometimes is all of this stuff that people accept--they have made a deal with ISIS, they cannot fight.

In my view, I conclude that it is an excuse that people use, frankly, to not have us involved.

We are asking them to fight. We are asking them to risk their lives, and yet we will not give them the protection from the air attacks.

You cannot ask people to go and fight and die unless you promise them that we will defeat their enemy and defeat them right away.

That cannot be good for our interests over time.

For us to say that we are going to go in and help and train-and-equip these people, and only to fight against ISIL, you're not going to get many recruits to do that.

Are you concerned, Secretary Hagel, about our southern border?

If the Free Syrian Army units are attacked from the air by Bashar Assad, will we prevent those attacks from taking place and take out Bashar Assad's air assets?

If one of the Free Syrian Army is fighting against Bashar Assad, and he is attacking them from the air, would we take action to prevent them from being attacked by Bashar Assad?

I understand that, according to your testimony, we will be training and equipping approximately 5,000 in 1 year.

The United States will not coordinate or cooperate with the Assad regime.

Assad has lost all legitimacy to govern and has created the conditions that allowed ISIL and other terrorist groups to gain ground.

That's a fundamental misunderstanding of the entire concept and motivation of the Free Syrian Army.

I take it from your answer that we are now recruiting these young men to go and fight in Syria against ISIL, but if they are attacked by Bashar Assad, we are not going to help them.

Destroying ISIL will require more than military efforts alone, it will require political progress in the region.

McCain said, you know, you should know better than that because I've been on the ground in Syria and I know what the situation is now and I know what the situation was two or three years ago.

I am astounded that -- Mr. Carney should say that the Free Syrian Army is now stronger. In fact, they have been --

You, in your role as a spokesperson bragged about the fact that the last American combat troop had left Iraq. If we had left a residual force, the situation would not be what it is today and there would be a lot more --

You don't have the facts, Mr. Carney. That is the problem.

It seems to me it dramatically heightens our requirement to have a secure Southern and Northern border.

Would you view it as a threat?

Some of us are hopeful that the President of the United States will finally recognize that threat and outline to the American people some actions that need to be taken.

Those of us who strongly supported comprehensive immigration reform are deeply disappointed in our lack of devotion of assets and funds and capabilities to secure our Southwestern border.

We have known about ISIS for 4 years. People like me and Lindsey Graham and many others have known about it and warned about it.

I believe they pose a direct threat to the United States of America because I believe the director of National Intelligence, head of the -- the secretary of Homeland Security, the whole list of our intelligence people.
