I would urge my colleagues to recognize that in the end we are 21 very imperfect Senators trying to do our best to provide advice and consent.
When Dr. Ford came forward with her account, I immediately said that she should be heard and asked the Chairman to delay the vote that we had scheduled.
This is a lifetime appointment, and this is said to be a deliberative body. In the interest of due diligence and fairness, her claims must be fully aired and considered.
I certainly do not think it is in our interest to bring the element of politics any closer to the judiciary.
