Everything about John's career also tells us that he understands one thing above all else: The promise contained in this Nation of laws can only be realized when all the laws are properly enforced. Two weeks ago, I went before the Judiciary Committee to ask that they judge John Ashcroft's nomination to be Attorney General on the content of his character, and reject the slime campaign then underway against him. Today I must say I stand here profoundly disappointed so many failed to push away those whose only goal is to tear down and destroy.”
