There is another side of the picture--the school drop-outs, the untrained and the unemployed and the underprivileged, the nearly one million young Americans arrested for infractions of the law, the growing number sent to correctional institutions.

Our young persons are caught in cross-currents of population growth and technological change which hold great danger as well as great promise.

The future promise of any nation can be directly measured by the present prospects of its youth.

First, that we provide 15,000 to 25,000 national scholarships for our brightest and most talented boys and girls, who will return that investment many times over in their useful life to our country.

And that is why we intend to work until a college education is available to every young man and woman with the talent to pursue it.

And, you know, if you get well enough acquainted with it, when these old people now that are running the Government get out, your turn will come, and you can keep it running on an even keel.

All of us ought to do as much as we possibly can to back up our young people in the armed services.

These young men are just like we were, they appreciate more than you will ever know what you people are doing.

I am still young enough to make a good race--foot race, I mean.

That is the reason this Republic of ours will continue to endure--because we have innumerable young men just like these four, who stand out for the welfare of this country, always.

I congratulate you young men again on a great job well done.

It doesn't mean a thing in my young life.

It is our responsibility to see that these young men receive the same sort of treatment as they would have received had they stayed at home.

What I have said to our American soldiers and sailors applies to all the young men and women of the United Nations who are facing our common enemies.

The cause of the United Nations is the cause of youth itself.

To cherish the memories of the valiant, to stimulate patriotism in the minds of youth and to inculcate respect for the flag, are aims which strike a responsive chord in the heart of all good citizens.

Yours is an organization devoted to safeguarding the moral and spiritual heritage of youth and to guiding it in the paths of right and joy of service.

You approach the problems of youth with sympathy and with confidence assured of the ultimate contributions with which they will refresh the common life of the world.
