Voting

What I am saying to you here now is: The vital importance is to get out the vote, to get it out up and down the line.

Since the Honolulu conference, more than 80 percent of the registered voters of South Vietnam have elected an assembly to draft a constitution.

I hope you people will remember that on election day by returning every member of the Democratic delegation from the great State of New York.

I want to thank all of you for being so good to us back in 1964 when the great State of New York gave us a landslide majority of more than two million votes.

On November 3d you are going to select the man whose thumb will have to touch that button if it is ever touched.

In particular, I urge that our first voters go to the polls proudly, knowing that the duty they perform is the price of the privilege they hold.

Now, Therefore, I, Lyndon B. Johnson, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate the period October 25 through October 31, 1964, as National First Voters Week.

I urge local election officials, private citizens, and citizen organizations to make a special effort during that week to assist in every possible way the millions of persons who are about to cast their first vote in a Presidential…

Make their choice carefully, understanding its importance to themselves and their fellow Americans.

Come November 3d, you are going to have a chance to help us unite.

And on November 3d I think that you are going to choose an administration that you believe is responsible.

You have an obligation to yourself and your children to select the person that you know is the most experienced, and the most capable of handling the future of your country and its citizens

I would like to see every person who felt that our program and our leadership for all America was preferred by them, to vote for us.

I think that every person in this country ought to support the candidate of his choice, and the candidate that he feels will best serve.

We have had a suit there since last August against the registrar on the ground of discrimination in the voting.

Every effort should be made to broaden the base of citizen participation in national and local affairs through the voting process.

You have to make a choice tomorrow on who shall be the next President of the United States.

The only thing I am responsible for is moving him out of office on Tuesday, November 8.
