I ask all Americans to join me in praying for his speedy and full recovery, and also for that of the others who were wounded in this senseless and tragic incident.

We must all stand together to eliminate its vicious threat from our public life; we must not permit the shadow of violence to fall over our country again.

I urge medical professionals, citizens groups, and the American people to unite during the month of May in public affirmation of this Nation's efforts to control arthritic diseases.

A true community must be a living entity in which the individuality of each member is a source of pride to all members, in which the unity of all is a source of strength to each, and the great community of the Americas cannot be complete without the participation of Canada.

To go forward at all is to go forward together

THANKSGIVING is a time of summing up in America--a time to count our blessings, a time to express both as one people and as individuals our thanks for those blessings.

I know that we will have your cooperation.

This is a great goal, and one that we can achieve together.

Ours should be the party of the open door, open to all people, all parties, all faiths, all races.

America's world leadership depends upon our being able to put aside partisan differences when the national interest is at stake and to band together to demonstrate the unity of purpose so vital to the success of our foreign policy.

We find that in the spirit of Christmas, in the spirit of peace, we can put aside what divides us and rediscover what really unites us--the concern for one another, the love of liberty and justice, the knowledge that we are a great Nation because we are a great and diverse people.

What we won when all of our people united just must not now be lost in suspicion, distrust, selfishness, and politics among any of our people.

I know that ugliness will yield to such a force, if it is supported by millions of our people, in public and private life.

Throughout the world old quarrels are being forgotten, and nation is joining nation in a common effort to try to improve the lot of man.

When we are greatly divided there is danger, but in unity there is strength.

That cooperation has shown the world that our purposes are the same.

The need for food transcends all the divisions man has created for himself.

Together, as we have always been, I know that we shall succeed.
