My friends, an enlightened trade policy in the international world for the United States means only this: we are trying to build a bridge, a permanent bridge, that will connect a growing and widely-shared prosperity at home with international peace.

In return, I can say only this: so far as the Almighty will give to this administration and to me personally the ability to discern the proper tasks, we shall do nothing but devote our efforts to try to lead this world--this Nation of ours--toward enduring peace, toward a better prosperity and equal justice for all here at home.

That, my friends, is what eventually will give us peace in the world.

We do not believe that war is inevitable.

Peace on earth is what we are both striving for.

Peace--real lasting peace--remains our greatest goal.

Both have the same aim--the aim of security and peace.

We can well afford to pay the price of peace.
