The country will need the help of scientists, including a large and strong contingent of physicists, if we are ever to be able to deal effectively with the central problems of the present and the future, to deal with the problems of peace in the world, and the welfare of three-quarters of the population of the earth who tonight live on the narrow edge of existence.

We are only now beginning to truly realize the impact which the physical sciences hold for the work of peace in the world.

We want, more than anything else, peace in the world and prosperity for all of its peoples.

We will be glad to meet anyone more than halfway, insofar as talking instead of fighting is concerned.

As we enter the New Year, we shall reaffirm our determination to secure a world at peace.

But we can say that aggression has been blunted, and that peace, with honor, will surely follow.

Throughout the world old quarrels are being forgotten, and nation is joining nation in a common effort to try to improve the lot of man.

I wish I could tell you that what you have fought for, peace in the world, is just around the corner, but there will be some long and difficult days ahead.
