Now, Therefore, I, Harry S. Truman, President of the United States of America, do hereby ask that on Flag Day, June 14, 1949, the people of the Nation honor our colors by displaying them at their homes or other suitable places and by giving thanks for their privileges as citizens under this flag as well as by engaging in earnest contemplation of the obligations inherent in citizenship.

I also direct the appropriate officials of the Government to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on Flag Day.

I think this great Nation has only begun to be great.

Every citizen wants to know what essential war work he can do the best.

I am going to give today just a few which are definitely going to give the Axis just the opposite of 'aid and comfort.'

You are not only fighting for your own country and your people—you are, in the larger sense, delegates of freedom.

Now it is up to us at home to prove worthy of them.

Our men in uniform have proved worthy of America.

We too are the United States of America. That is why we must work and sacrifice.

I most strongly urge that the people of the United States can best observe Army Day by honoring our Citizen Soldiers.

I call upon the people of the United States to express the love and reverence which we feel for the mothers of our country by the customary display of the flag at our homes and other suitable places and by tokens and messages of affection.

I would rather, for example, I would rather see a few more parades in this country.

The time has now arrived for a new offensive rally in the spirit that has made America great.

The true eulogy of Washington is this mighty Nation.

That flag 'still floats from the top of the Capitol.'
