Military

I believe the military has much less legitimacy today.

We're in agreement that the military should restore democracy and return back power to the civilian government.

Many of us in Congress have spoken out strongly against the coup and urge for stronger actions like sanctions against the military.

I would call out the military.

And I support military spending, particularly for the men and women who are in active duty, who are living on marginal wages.

In my experience as an infantry officer on the ground in Iraq, there were many times when I was asked to do jobs that I was unprepared for and untrained for, because they were State Department jobs, but the State Department wasn't there.

Stable funding allows our military members to plan and meet growing needs and threats.

Ultimately, however, it is not going to be enough to defeat ISIL in the battlefield.

A military solution will not fix it, even if the United States participates.

So this will be tough. But as so often is the case, our men and women in uniform show us the way.
