I know, from what Congressman Wayne Hays of Ohio has told me, how much the parliamentarians have done to plan to ensure that this great instrument of the defense of freedom will flourish and continue to keep the peace.

We will always stand with you in the defense of freedom.

We must subordinate our loyalty to any group to a greater loyalty and commitment to the moral principle upon which this Republic was founded, that is, to freedom and to justice and to the brotherhood of man.

We reject the thought of our families living in a faceless, regimented, monotonous America.

Freedom is not on the run anywhere in the world--not in Europe, Asia, Africa, or Latin America--as it might well have been without U.S. aid.

The first is the right of every nation to govern itself, to be free from outside dictation and coercion, to mold its own economy and society in any fashion consistent with the will of the people.

Our high voyage, Mr. President, is not to seek new lands to conquer, but to make sure that old lands remain free.

I come here today with 180 million fellow Americans who want this hemisphere to be free, and who want this hemisphere to be an example to a watching world in the crucial years of this century and this decade.

Americans are free to disagree with the law but not to disobey it.

We are wholeheartedly behind your effort to maintain the freedom of your people and we wish for you what we wish for ourselves, and that is peace and an opportunity to develop our country.

We stand with Venezuela, we stand with you, in the fight for freedom during these great days of the sixties.

In freeing themselves, the Negroes have enlarged the freedoms of all Americans.

From Peiping to Warsaw, from Budapest to Havana, millions of people have lost their freedom.

But if you hold my view that the United States as the great defender of freedom in the 1960's has to move ahead, has to provide opportunity for its people, has to develop in this country a strong and vigorous society which it cannot possibly do under the administration of a candidate who reassures and comforts the people in a time of hazard and a time of peril, I believe this country has a great destiny in the sixties.

We are the chief defenders of freedom, and it is incumbent upon us to get moving again.

And the truth will make us free.

If we fail here, if we drift, if we lie at anchor, if we don't provide an example of what freedom can do in the 1960's, then we have betrayed not only ourselves and our destiny, but all those who desire to be free and are not free.

In a difficult and trying time in the life of our country, in the cause of freedom, may bring candles to help illuminate our country's way.
