Vice President Gore and I have set a goal of connecting every classroom in America to the Internet.

I'm pleased to announce that new Department of Education data show that more than half of all our Nation's classrooms are now connected—nearly twice as many connections as last year.

By giving our children the skills they need to succeed in the jobs of the future, we'll build a stronger nation for the 21st century.

This act will help move our education system forward by ensuring that States and school districts end social promotion.

I welcome the idea of greater flexibility for States and school districts.

We will never be the country we ought to be in the 21st century until every child gets a world-class education.

Smaller classes make a big difference, from improved test scores to improved discipline.

We also have to recognize that we're not yet giving all of our children a world-class education.

The Senate should pass the Kennedy-Murray amendment and give our Nation's children the individual attention they deserve in the classroom.

I think that means, among other things, continuing our work for better prepared teachers, smaller classes, hooking up all the classrooms to the Internet.

Ghana already invests a phenomenal 40 percent of its budget in education.

We are not doing our children any favors by continuing to subsidize practices that don't work and failing to invest in practices that do.

I think it is very important that we invest more money, as we have more children, and as we are going to have to replace a large number of teachers who will be retiring.

I know we have a lot of things to do today, but I'd like to spend my few moments talking about the education of our kids.
